An exciting finish to this Munster Junior Cup match in Kinsale saw Clanwilliam scoring a winning drop goal in the last play of the game. In a match where defence were to the fore, there were few scoring chances but Clanwilliam made the most of the opportunities that came their way to win 12-10.

Last Sunday's win puts Clanwilliam in shape for their trip to Bandon next Sunday, a League match Clanwilliam must win to keep their promotion prospects alive. Hopefully the large number of supporters that travelled to Kinsale will again make the trip to west Cork.

Thank you to all that helped with the very successful teenage disco in the club last week-end.

Clanwilliam 12 Kinsale 10

An exciting finish to this Munster Junior Cup match in Kinsale saw Clanwilliam scoring a winning drop goal in the last play of the game. In a match where defence were to the fore, there were few scoring chances but Clanwilliam made the most of the opportunities that came their way.

Kinsale started strongly playing a fast paced game with their back-line moving the ball wide as much as possible. The early pressure produced a successful penalty for Kinsale after ten minutes. Kinsale continued to attack but were continually met by strong tackling from Clanwilliam. Clanwilliam upped their game and from a good line-out platform were making in-roads with their driving maul. There was little between the sets of forwards and much of the rest of the half was played out between the two twenty twos.

Kinsale had the better chances but Clanwilliam showed their commitment with some important cover tackles from Ian Quinlan, David McCormack and Gavin Ryan to keep the score 3-0 at half time.

Clanwilliam exerted more control over matters when the game resumed and after ten minutes were on level terms when Willie O'Dwyer kicked a penalty. Clanwilliam were finding it difficult to get into scoring positions with an alert Kinsale back-row putting in numerous tackles. With thirteen minutes to go Kinsale scored a try near the posts after a series of rucks to go into a seven point lead. Clanwilliam didn't loose heart and managed to immediately bring play back up the field and won a penalty which Willie O'Dwyer kicked.

Clanwilliam were now dominating the play and another penalty put them one point adrift with a few minutes remaining. It looked like Clanwilliam's chances had run out when Kinsale won a scrum in their twenty and the referee called last play. The ball was passed to the Kinsale out-half who unusually did not put it out of play but kicked down-field. Robert Doyle gathered and passed to Kieran Merrigan who brought play back towards the Kinsale twenty two. The Clanwilliam forwards seized the opportunity and worked a number of rucks to bring the ball close to the Kinsale line. Scrum half Andrew Lacey played a crisp pass to Willie O Dwyer on the twenty two and he popped over a drop goal for a Clanwilliam victory.

The team showed great character in winning this match against a very good Kinsale team who had the better chances to win the game. Richmond will be Clanwilliam's opponents in the next round of the Junior Cup in Tipperary.

Last Sunday's win puts Clanwilliam in shape for their trip to Bandon next Sunday, a League match Clanwilliam must win to keep their promotion prospects alive. Hopefully the large number of supporters that travelled to Kinsale will again make the trip to west Cork.
